Ab Exercises are Boring and Useless

Those sexy flat abs are completely within reach without those boring ab exercises or useless (and overpriced) ab machines. All you need are the basics really! That would include basic cardio exercises and basic weight training or strength training exercises. Notice that ab exercises aren’t even in that teeny tiny list? Well that’s because ab exercises have almost nothing to do with being able to show off those sexy abs!

The very first step to getting to those abs is by changing your diet. No matter what weight you’re at or what your pant size or waistline measurement is, everyone has body fat. Even someone who seems to be just so skinny has body fat. So the key is to cut body fat and replace that fat with muscle. Oh and this is probably the only time that the BMI (Body Mass Index) will actually come in handy, even if only as an arbitrary number to focus on.

Now, how do you cut your fat intake? Well, it isn’t by cutting out fat all together. There are good and bad fats and if you have excess body fat, well that means you’ve been eating the bad fats. Bad fats aren’t the only culprits in this though. Sugars (especially processed or chemically produced sugar) is horrible, absolutely horrible for you! Think diet sodas (but sodas are bad anyways as they are) and pre-packaged processed foods. This doesn’t mean that fresh baked cookies are okay to binge on. No way. Eat it in moderation, if you eat it at all!

Okay so foods you should eat are basically all found in the produce and meat section of your grocery store. Stick with fresh vegetables and fruits with high quality meats. As far as sugar goes, you’ll get plenty from fruits, which also offer fiber. You won’t need bread, if you really think about it but it’s not as horrible as laboratory sugar. Avoid everything else! Well, at the very least, cut everything else down to very rare occasions or events to avoid allowing those foods (ie: junk food) to have less negative affects on you.

So that was the hard part, getting your general lifestyle to be in the same sexy ab focus. Cutting certain unhealthy foods will absolutely cut your body fat. A great way to push it along is though exercise! It may not be ab exercises, which are mind-boring, but you still need to put workout as a top priority in your quest to get sexy flat abs.

Like I mentioned, your workouts should include cardio and weight training. These two exercise types will help you further reduce body fat. Cardio should be something along the lines of running, sprinting, or even speed walking. The main focus is to get your heart rate up and to make sure your whole body is getting a great workout in. Bicycling is usually considered cardio but it’s less of an all-body workout so it wouldn’t really work for this. Weight training is also all about heart rate and physical ability of your whole body because lifting weights requires your whole body, not just one part.

You’re probably wondering why all these burn-fat, cut-fat ideas. Well, fat, especially body fat rests right above muscles because the job of fat is to serve as energy but also plays a role in almost shielding important muscles. Abs are important, right? So anyway, there is body fat covering your abs and that’s the case with everyone. Once you start to shed body fat though, your abs become more predominant and the definition of your abs is much more visible. Even without ab exercises, your flat abs will definitely bring the sexiness back because that’s where your all-body workouts were contributing!

Simple is the best and I think you’ll agree that simple diet plus simple workout routine is the easiest way to get to a point where you can show off your sexy flat abs!

Cool, arent they?

If you want to create the best core workout, you need both ab and back exercises. When most people think about the core, their first thought is ab exercises, but ab exercises by themselves won’t make a complete core workout. When you include lower back exercises and ab exercises in your workout, you will have a well rounded and balanced core.

Ab exercises help you to generate power moving forwards and prevent the spine from moving too far backwards.  Some of the best ab exercises are planks, crunches on a ball, side planks, sit ups, and leg raises.

Planks are an isometric ab exercise in which you simply balance on your elbow and toes and hold that position.  Side planks are also an isometric ab exercise in which you are balanced on one elbow and your feet.  Crunches on a stability ball offer increased range of motion when compared to the floor and can help to improve balance.  Sit ups are a classic ab exercise and they are great for athletes, but they can put more pressure on the lower back than crunches on a ball.  Lastly, leg raises are also tough on the lower back, but they are great for improving core stability and pelvic control.

Lower back exercises help you to generate power moving backwards and while lifting and prevent the spine from moving too far forwards.  Lower back exercises are just as important as ab exercises for preventing lower back pain.

Some of the best lower back exercises are back extensions on a ball, back extensions on the floor, and back extensions on a slant board.  You can add a rotational movement to all of the previous exercises to add a more challenging element.  In addition to the back extension movement, you can also do the stiff leg dead lift or the conventional dead lift.

The dead lift position and motion is important for a well rounded core workout, because many lower back injuries occur when you are lifting.  So, it makes sense to practice the lifting motion and position during your core workouts.

The abdominal muscles and lower back muscles help to rotate and side bend the spine, and they both help to stabilize the lumbar spine and lower back.  Rotational exercises are very important to any core workout.  Functional activities and athletic activities happen in multiple directions and multiple planes.  Generally, our bodies are weakest in rotational directions, so it is important to include rotational movements in your core workout.  Some of the best rotational exercises are the Russian twist, standing cable lifts or chops, and standing cable rotations.

Both the abs and lower back are important for core workouts.  So, if you really want well-rounded core workouts, think abs and back.

Cool, arent they?

As a trainer, nutrition specialist, and fitness professional, I frequently get asked “what are the best ab exercises for losing stubborn stomach fat”. The problem is most people with stomach fat looking to uncover their abs are searching for some “miracle abdominal workout” that is going to melt the fat off their abs in no time.

Rather telling my readers to use the typical routines that we see so often with situps, leg lifts, crunches, ab machines, etc… I like to provide my readers highly effective high intensity workouts that workout their entire body, boost their metabolism while also working their abs.

I’m going to show you today one of my favorite abdominal workouts that does not include any direct ab exercises and will provide high intensity producing getter results. This particular workout is in a tri-set format (very similar to super-set exercises but alternating between three exercises).

Let’s get started:

1. Renegade Dumbbell Rows

2. Front Squats with Barbell

3. Mountain Climbers on Floor

Here is a good structure of how to build your workout. You want to keep your repetitions between 3-4 sets of 8-10 reps for each exercise, or more sets with less reps, such as 5 sets of 6 reps for each exercise. Use time intervals (such as 30 seconds) instead of reps for Mountain Climbers.

Renegade dumbbell rows are one of my favorite ab exercises and works very well when preformed correctly. The correct way to perform this exercise is to get a set of dumbbells. You will position your hands on the dumbbells and start in the pushup position. Next, you will row one dumbbell forward while stabilizing your body with the opposite arm. Forcing your body to stabilize during the row creates an incredible workout for your entire midsection core area. You’ll really feel it in your abs…trust me!

Front squats with a barbell is mostly a leg exercise that also produces a highly effective ab workout at the same time…you’ll feel this one in the abs big time! Front squats are performed similar to back squats. The difference is you will be resting the barbell in front of your body rather then your upper back as in back squats. You begin by stabilizing the barbell on your shoulders by crossing your arms and pushing your fists against the bar while keeping your elbows out in front of your body. Due to supporting the weight in front of your body you may want to start lighter and seek a professional trainer at your gym to help you with your form. This takes a little practice at first so take it slow and focus using good form. Front squats require extreme stabilization strength from the abs due to the weight being shifted to the front of the body. This is key to achieving a high intensity ab work.

Mountain climbers are preformed by starting in the pushup position and then moving your feet in and out alternating the left and right so that your knees are moving in under your chest and back to the starting position. This movement resembles climbing a mountain and will help increase your heart rate and metabolism. If you feel these are to easy and want an advanced version, you can shuffle your hands 8-10 inches forward and backward during the leg movements. Adding the additional body movements makes this a full body workout and MUCH more difficult.

After you finish each exercise, rest about 30 seconds before beginning the next exercise. Between each “tri-set” rest about 1-2 minutes before repeating.

I have just given you one of the best ab workouts you have ever had without doing any direct ab exercises and at the same time you have exercised your entire body. Give it a try and you will see what I mean after you try it!
